Pepper
- From Reactive to Reliable
Before starting her training journey, Pepper struggled with severe dog reactivity that made everyday life incredibly limiting for both her and her owner. Walks were stressful and unpredictable, to the point where her owner would only take her out at odd hours to avoid running into other dogs.
If Pepper saw another dog, she would lunge, pull, and completely disregard her handler. Her prey drive added another layer of difficulty, as she would chase after critters without hesitation. Commands meant very little to her, and she had little to no engagement with her owner during training or daily life.
To make things even more challenging, Pepper had very low food and work drive. She was not easily motivated by treats or toys, making traditional training methods ineffective. She was stubborn, disengaged, and difficult to reach.
From the start, our focus with Pepper was building engagement, communication, and clarity. Before we could expect obedience, we needed to teach her how to value working with her handler.
Through structured training, consistency, and a balanced approach, Pepper began to understand expectations and find purpose in her work. We worked through her reactivity step by step, helping her learn how to remain neutral and composed around other dogs rather than reacting impulsively.
As her engagement grew, everything started to change. Pepper began to respond to commands, stay connected with her handler, and make better decisions even in high distraction environments.
By the end of her program, Pepper’s transformation was undeniable. She is now off leash trained, reliable, and fully responsive to her owner. She no longer lunges or reacts to other dogs and can walk calmly through her neighborhood at normal hours.
Her recall is strong enough to call her off of critters, something that once felt impossible. She is able to handle busy environments and confidently accompanies her owner to dog friendly stores, restaurants, and public spaces.
Pepper has even reached a point where she can safely interact and play with other dogs, forming positive relationships instead of reacting out of frustration or over arousal.
At home, her separation anxiety has improved significantly. She no longer scratches at the door when her owner leaves and is able to settle calmly on her own.
What once felt overwhelming and restrictive has turned into freedom, trust, and a true partnership.
Pepper’s journey is proof that even the most challenging behaviors can be transformed with the right structure, guidance, and commitment.
